Canviiy at Moffitt

Many cancer patients experience itchy skin because of their diagnosis, as a side effect, or from other disorders. In cancer patients, itching can be caused by cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, targeted therapy or immunotherapy. Or the cancer itself can cause itching, particularly skin cancer and blood cancers like leukemia.

Certain medications used as part of cancer treatment such as pain medicines, drugs for nausea or vomiting, or hormone treatments can also cause discomfort. Continuous itching can cause skin to break, bleed, or get an infection, so prevention and skin care are important. Dry skin, jaundice, an infection, or allergy can also be causes of itching to speak to your care team about.

Moffitt is proud of its Supplier Diversity program, that includes opening up partnerships to minority owned businesses like Canviiy. Diversity and representation make the cancer center stronger as well as provide opportunity for the local business community. Moffitt’s Supplier Diversity Office works with registered diverse vendors identified as minority, women, veteran or service-disabled-veteran-owned businesses to ensure that diverse businesses have an opportunity to do work with the cancer center.

Magnolias Hair Salon is located at Moffitt Cancer Center, at 12902 USF Magnolia Drive, Tampa, FL 33612. For appointments, please call 813-745-7299 or visit http://Moffitt.org/Salon

INPATIENT/OUTPATIENT SCALP HEALTH TIPS

Dealing with cancer can be stressful. There are often a long list of side effects to go along with your treatment plan. Research now suggests that chronic stress can actually make cancer spread faster (NIH National Library of Medicine). So here’s some informative tips to alleviate stress of the unknown by addressing common side effects during one’s journey.

CHEMOTHERAPY »

The first thing that comes to mind when you hear chemotherapy is hair loss. Hair loss will greatly depend on your chemo dose and duration of treatments. On average, you can expect hair loss one to three weeks after your first treatment. Patients may experience a sore, irritated scalp before hair loss, during the shedding process, and when new hair growth occurs. Along with the dreaded side effect of hair loss, drying of the skin may occur. The last thing we want is for you to itch, scratch, and now have the potential of an infection. Canviiy products are formulated with lavender, jojoba, and organic aloe vera to soothe itching and swelling and provide moisture without clogging pores. On average, patients will start to see new hair growth within 3 months of completing treatment. Hair grows on average ½ inch per month. Now not every hair follicle will get the message on the same date. Wanting to speed up the process? Stay away from chemical based products as that new hair growth is reliant upon it and will shed once your regimen stops.

RADIATION AND IMMUNOTHERAPY »

Your treatment plan has a more direct approach and the side effects will differ from those receiving chemotherapy. Although hair loss is not as common, those battling head and neck cancer may see hair loss around the treatment area. Both treatment plans can have a large impact on your skin. According to the Cleveland Clinic, in the US more than 90% of Radiation patients will have some form of radiation dermatitis, better known as Radiation burn. Some types of Immunotherapy can make you more sensitive to the sun, making sunburns more common. Canviiy products are formulated with lavender, peppermint, and organic aloe vera to soothe inflammation, and provide a cooling sensation.

DERMATOLOGY »

Eczema affects your skin's ability to retain moisture and protect you from bacterial irritants and allergens. This causes the skin to thicken and crack. Psoriasis causes the skin cells to grow faster than usual, which results in dry, scaly patches that have a sore sensation, and can itch and burn. Both conditions benefit from manuka honey, turmeric, and jojoba to help moisturize without clogging pores, reduce inflammation, have antibacterial properties, and reduce flakes by disturbing the regular cell division process of staphylococcus aureus.
